2008 Meloy Stevenson Award of Distinction

Awarded to Robert Harrison and Richard Notkin
Presented Saturday, July 26, 2008

The Meloy Stevenson Award of Distinction acknowledges outstanding service to the Archie Bray Foundation and is granted to individuals whose commitment has helped to sustain the Bray as “a fine place to work.”

Robert HarrisonRobert Harrison
Former Archie Bray resident artist and former board member.

Robert was elected President of the board in 1999 and served until 2004. With intelligence, wisdom and care, Robert led the Bray through a large transition which culminated with the Bray’s first capital campaign. This campaign resulted in the successful completion of the Shaner Resident Studios and the start of the Bray Endowment. Robert no sooner left the Bray Board and immediately became President Elect of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA).

Robert currently resides in Helena, Montana with his wife, Christel, and daughter, Hanna, and operates his studio, Granitwood, creating site-specific sculptures around the United States and as far away as Denmark and Wales. A number of Robert’s impressive large scale works can be seen on the Bray grounds.

Richard NotkinRichard Notkin
Former Archie Bray resident artist and former board member.

Richard initiated the summer silent benefit auctions twelve years ago to help support the Bray residents through the Resident Artist Scholarship Fund (RASF).  Richard was the event and auction chair in 2001 for the highly successful 2001: Clay Odyssey symposium during the 50th Anniversary.  Proceeds from the Clay Odyssey auctions and sales added a significant sum to the RASF, allowing the resident artist studio fees to be completely eliminated.

Richard moved to Helena, Montana from the coast of Oregon in the 90’s to be near to the Bray.  He and his wife, Phoebe Toland are both full time studio artists. Richard’s work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and the Mint Museum of Craft and Design among others and he was recently named a Fellow of the American Craft Council.
