2009 Meloy Stevenson Award of Distinction

Awarded to Raymond Dockstader and Sarah Jaeger
Presented Saturday, July 25, 2009

The Meloy Stevenson Award of Distinction acknowledges outstanding service to the Archie Bray Foundation and is granted to individuals whose commitment has helped to sustain the Bray as “a fine place to work.”

Raymond Dockstader
1930-2009
Former Archie Bray board and committee member.

Raymond L. Dockstader, aide and adviser to former Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield (D-Mont.), and deputy director of the American Folk Life Center was an award-winning artist and member of the Archie Bray Foundation Board of Directors 1974–97. He was the President of the Board for the last five years of his term.

“Ray Dockstader was a good friend to the Bray. Not only was he a great supporter, he was also a talented and curious individual who was well recognized for his beautiful needlepoint works. Had it not been for his passion and influence, we would not be where we are today.” –Steven Young Lee

“As an aide to Senator Mansfield, Ray played a key role in influencing the Small Business Administration to secure the purchase of the pottery in 1966. Thanks to his efforts, the Bray was able to survive. “
–Josh DeWeese

A memorial plaque in Ray’s honor will be permanently installed on the historic Pottery building.

Sarah Jaeger
Former Archie Bray resident artist and former board member.

A  former resident of the Archie Bray Foundation, Sarah Jaeger served on the Bray Board of Directors from 1992–2003, during a period of tremendous growth and maturing for the Bray.  From the beginning she championed the inclusion of women on the board.   For many years before the Bray had a development staff, Sarah served as chair of the Board Development Committee. She also was chair of the Steering Committee for the Campaign for the Bray which raised more than $3 million and allowed construction of the new Shaner Studio Complex with no finance charges.

Sarah’s extraordinary service to the Bray is grounded in an exceptional career as an artist.  Although she likes to call herself the village potter, Sarah’s work is found in galleries, homes, and kitchens around the country.  In 1991 Sarah was honored as an NCECA Emerging Artist.   Twenty-five years and many kiln firings later, Sarah was named as one of the first United States Artists.  She also is featured in the PBS production, Craft in America.
