Glazing: An Adventure in Color with Kathy Butterly, 2016 Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellow July 2–4, 2016 What is glaze, how does it function and what is its potential? All these questions and many more will be answered in this three-day hands-on workshop with Kathy Butterly. Participants will discover the value of prioritizing considerations for glaze over those for form as well as the importance of glaze choices, the impact of color on a piece and the secrets to achieving dynamic glazed surfaces. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with color-rich, low-fire glazes on either functional or sculptural work and discuss the results as a group as well as individually with Butterly. Believing that “there are only successes,” Butterly offers students a chance to look at glaze unlike ever before. Participants are encouraged to bring low-fire bisqueware for experimentation.

2016 Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellowship The Bray is pleased to award Kathy Butterly with the 2016 Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellowship. Butterly will spend a few weeks in July at the Bray working in the Voulkos Visiting Artist Studio. The Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellowship was created in memory of the renowned ceramic artist Peter Voulkos. His family and friends established the fellowship at the Archie Bray Foundation to invite a distinguished artist to work at the Bray each year. Peter Voulkos taught by example, working alongside other artists in the studio, fostering artistic exchange and dialogue, and nurturing mutual respect. In the same spirit, the Voulkos Fellow is invited to work in an environment that encourages interaction among the artists and the Bray community. |
