Contemporary Design by Hand
with James Klein and David Reid
June 6–17, 2016

James Klein and David Reid encourage makers of all types—artists, designers and craftspeople—to join them for this unique two-week hands-on workshop as they explore the ideas, techniques and business strategies behind their iconic ceramic design studio, KleinReid. Demonstrations will include techniques derived from traditional pottery making and industrial fabrication. To encourage students to think more like designers, participants will be asked to work on a collection or a small series of ceramic pieces during the workshop. Students should bring ideas and sketches related to their own studio practice, which will inform their collection. Everyone will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their designs and assistance in problem solving the production of their work. Additionally, Klein and Reid will offer strategies for addressing business challenges that makers face today, such as how to find or develop a market for their work. By the end of the two weeks, students will be able to take with them finished work, designs for future projects and a deeper understanding of the business side of art.
