2011 Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellow

The Bray is pleased to have Richard Shaw working in the Voulkos Visiting Artist Studio as the 2011 Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellow this August. During this time he will have an opportunity to share his knowledge and experience as well as gain new ones.

In addition to spending time in the studio, Shaw will present a two-day workshop August 13–14. Richard Shaw is known as a master of trompe l’oeil sculpture. He received a National Endowment Grant that permitted Shaw to explore a method of transferring photo silkscreen decals onto ceramic pieces. In his two-day demonstration workshop, Shaw will create newsprint underglaze transfers, laser transfers, and overglaze transfers and then he will show how he applies them in his artwork.

Richard Shaw is currently a professor of art, teaching ceramics and drawing at the University of California at Berkley. He obtained his BFA in 1965 at the San Francisco Art Institute and received his MFA at the University of California at Davis in 1968. Shaw returned to the San Francisco Art Institute in 1966 to teach for twenty years. He was a resident artist at Shigaraki Cultural Ceramic Park in Japan and Shaw also was the Manufacture National de Sevres in Paris. In 1998, Shaw was elected as a fellow of the American Craft Council. Today, his work is gathered in private and public collections nationally and internationally. His works reside in places such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, The San Francisco Museum of Art, the Taipai Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.

The Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellowship was created in memory of the renowned ceramic artist, Peter Voulkos. His family and friends established the Fellowship at the Archie Bray Foundation to invite a distinguished artist to work at the Bray each year. Peter Voulkos taught by example, working alongside other artists in the studio, fostering artistic exchange and dialogue, and nurturing mutual respect. In the same spirit, the Voulkos Fellow is invited to work in an environment that encourages interaction among the artists and the Bray community.
