Nathan Craven, 2009-2010 MJD Fellow
resident 2008-2010

Nathan Craven
Nathan Craven, from Ogden Utah, earned his BFA in ceramics from Weber State University in 2005 and a MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008. He is the first recipient of the Archie Bray Foundation MJD Fellowship for 2008-2009.

"Through the act of arranging, stacking, balancing, and connecting porous ceramic units I invite the viewer to experience how a wall or floor might contain space and direct flow through space in new ways.

The eighteenth century German philosopher Immanuel Kant described decoration as 'enlivening the object for sensation.' In my work, extruded forms function both as decoration and as structure. Depending on their context, they become floors, window screens, and room dividers. This architecture is not merely decorated it actually grows from decoration."
