Understanding Ceramic Glazes with Pete Pinnell May 18–20, 2018 Tuition $365 (includes $40 lab fee) Maximum enrollment 18 Open to intermediate and advanced artists This three-day workshop is an intensive look at ceramic glazes. Pinnell will discuss glaze materials and demonstrate efficient testing methods while students mix glazes and load tests into kilns. Fired results will be examined and changes will be explored. Students are encouraged to bring questions and goals for finished glazes. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of glazes, know how to mix and develop their own glazes and have test tiles to take home. The class will fire tests at cone 6
oxidation and cone 10 reduction.

Pete Pinnell was a full-time studio potter for 12 years before joining the University of Nebraska in 1995, where he is currently a professor of art. In addition to his teaching, he exhibits his pottery widely throughout the U.S. and in a variety of international venues. Pinnell served as chair of the Department of Art and Art History from 2011 to 2016 and has been active in art accreditation, serving as a site visitor for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Pinnell enjoys researching the history and aesthetics of ceramics. He has spoken at a number of major ceramics conferences, including NCECA and Utilitarian Clay. He has written articles for Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter, and Ceramics Art and Perception, and his column, “As Far As I Know,” has appeared in Clay Times magazine since 1997. During the course of his career, Pinnell has taught professional workshops at Anderson Ranch Art Center, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, the Archie Bray Foundation, more than 20 colleges and universities and at numerous community art centers. | |
